Congratulations! You're a Black Bear!
You join a select group of
students who will become members of our entering class this year. There
are some important steps you need to take to let us know of your
intention to enroll at UMaine, and to ensure that you receive timely and
appropriate information from the University in the days ahead.
Please review the
following information carefully.
The Enrollment Deposit
Please return the confirmation form you received with your acceptance
letter with a deposit of $150.00 to the Admissions Office in the
envelope provided. This deposit will be credited to your account in the
University Bursar’s Office.
If you do not plan to attend UMaine, please inform us as soon as
possible.
- For fall 2007 enrollment, your
enrollment deposit and confirmation form must be returned by May 1,
2007, or within two weeks of your admission letter if you are accepted
after May 1. Early enrollment confirmation deposits are refundable
upon written request until April 30.
- For spring 2007 enrollment, your
enrollment deposit and confirmation form should be received by January
2, 2007, or within two weeks of your admission letter if you have been
accepted after January 2. Enrollment confirmation deposits are
refundable upon written request until January 2.
Once you have submitted your enrollment
deposit, the Admission Office will notify your Dean’s Office and
administrative departments to assist you with registration, academic
advising, billing, and student support services.
Registering for Classes
As a degree student, you will register for courses through the Dean’s
Office of the college to which you have been accepted.
Financial Aid
To be considered for financial aid you must file the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We encourage you to submit
your application electronically. If you have not filed a FAFSA, you
should do so as soon as possible. The FAFSA form must be received by the
Federal Student Aid Processing Center prior to March 1 for priority
processing. Failure to meet
this deadline may seriously affect your financial aid. Financial aid
award letters are mailed after required documents are received for
spring enrollment, and beginning March 1 for fall enrollment.
Contact the
Office of Student Financial Aid at 207-581-1324 for further
information regarding eligibility and availability of funds.

What do I need for a computer?
The Computer Connection is a non-profit computer store at the
University of Maine, located on the first floor of the Memorial Union.
Computer Connection works with the colleges in deciding what computer to
recommend or require.
For more information on choosing a computer with the right
specifications, visit the UMaine Computer Connection store.
Open House Programs
If you have not already attended one of our Open House Programs we
encourage you to do so. Check-in begins at 8:00 am in the Maine Center
for the Arts.
register for an Open House program or contact the Admissions Office by phone at
1-877-486-2364. If accommodations for physical disabilities are
required, please notify us in advance.
New Student Orientation
All new students are expected to participate in one of our two-day
Orientation programs. Invitations for January orientation are mailed in
mid-November and invitations for June orientation are mailed beginning
early May. Click here for dates and information
for orientation or call 207/581-1590.
Transfer Students
Transfer credit evaluations are initiated in the Office of Student
Records where a preliminary evaluation is created from all official
transcripts received to date. The preliminary evaluation is then
forwarded to your college or program dean’s office for final evaluation
and approval. Once the evaluation has received final approval you will
receive a copy of it in the mail.
Living on Campus
Please note that applying for on-campus housing and a meal plan is a
process separate from applying to the University of Maine. Once you have
confirmed that you will be attending the University of Maine by sending
in your Confirmation Card and paying your $150.00 enrollment deposit,
you will automatically be sent a letter from Housing Services
instructing you how to access the Online Housing Application. You will
also be sent the web address to actually log-in and complete the
application, and to learn more about housing and meal options. This
letter will advise you as to when and how you can access your room
assignment, and roommate contact information. We encourage students to
apply for a housing assignment and meal plan as soon as possible as
there are more spaces available earlier and the chances of receiving
your desired assignment are greater. Students not assigned by New
Student Orientation in mid-Jun will be assigned on a first application
received, first assigned basis throughout the summer.
For more information on housing options, please contact Housing
Services, 5704 Androscoggin Hall, Orono ME 04469-5704. You may also
email us at
housing@umerl.maine.edu or call (207) 581-4580 Monday through Friday
from 8:00am to 4:30pm (EST). The Housing Services Web site with answers
to most questions can be found at
www.umaine.edu/housing.
Do I need to live on campus?
Unless students live within commuting distance of campus, are 21 years
of age or over, or have extenuating circumstances that will interfere
with living on campus, new students are required to live on campus in
one of our First Year Residential Experience residence halls
(Androscoggin, Cumberland, Gannett, Knox, Oxford and Somerset), or in
Honors College Housing where the students will have their own First Year
Residential Experience (Balentine, Colvin and Penobscot). On average,
each building has four floors and range in size from 38 students to 290
students in each building. Main entrances to all buildings are locked 24
hours and accessible only by security cards issued to each resident of
that facility. Students are responsible for locking the doors to their
rooms within the facilities. Each building has study lounges, recreation
areas, laundries, and vending machines. Items to bring: bed linen, desk
lamp, throw rug, towels, toiletries, long distance calling cards, bike
and lock, computer, skis/skates and yes, cars are allowed for first year
students. If you wish to bring a small refrigerator, you may bring ONE
per room of 4.0 cubic feet or less, or if you wish to have a small
microwave, you MUST rent a MicroFridge® Combination Appliance which has
a refrigerator, freezer and microwave all in one. Information regarding
this appliance is sent to each student upon confirmation that you will
be attending the University of Maine. Items not to bring: stand alone
microwave, pets, water bed, hot plate, toaster, coffee pot, neon signs,
weapons. Once you receive your roommate assignment, it is useful to
communicate with him/her to decide who is bringing certain items, as
there is no need for duplication of items like a mini refrigerator,
MicroFridge®, television or throw rugs.
Student Service Center
Add funds to your MaineCard and
buy a Parking Permit — all in one convenient location! The
Student Service Center offers one-stop shopping for students,
faculty and staff on the first floor of the Memorial Union. Please
remember to bring a photo ID with you.
Immunization Requirements
Maine Law requires all full-time and part-time, degree-seeking students
born after 1956 to provide proof of immunization against TD
(tetanus/diphtheria) within the last 10 years and MMR (measles, mumps,
rubella) after your first birthday. If measles immunization was done
prior to 1968, you must provide proof it was done with a live virus.
Send a photocopy of your immunization record signed by a doctor or nurse
with specific evidence of dosage, type of vaccine and/or immunity to
Student Health Services, 5721 Cutler Health Center, University of Maine,
Orono, ME 04469-5721 (Tel: 207-581-4179; Fax: 207-581-3997). A high
school immunization record is acceptable without a doctor’s or nurse’s
signature, but requires the signature of a school official.
Compliance is mandatory. Registration can not be completed until
proof of immunization has been verified by Cutler Health Center.
Campus Employment
The Office of Student Employment is located on the third floor of the
Memorial Union. If you plan to work on campus, proof of eligibility is
required (social security card, birth certificate or passport). Bring
two of these documents with you to campus.
