Go Blue - Play

Kevin BaileyA lot of my friends go to smaller schools, and they always go home for the weekend. I can’t really picture that, because there’s always stuff to do here — good musical performances, if you’re into the arts there are always plays, plus, this is a D1 sports school. There’s really something for everyone. I think that’s why I never go home. There’s always something going on.

Some people think Orono is in the middle of nowhere. Frankly, we prefer to think that UMaine is in the middle of everywhere. The campus is smack dab in the center of the state, less than an hour away from the tallest mountain in Maine and the most stunning coastline you’ll ever see. And don’t even get us started on the lakes.

It’s not like you need to leave campus to have a good time, though. Instead, you can take in a concert or play by an internationally renowned act at the newly renovated Collins Center for the Performing Arts. Thanks to our Campus Activities Board, you can take in a movie, compete during games night or listen to play music in the Memorial Union. Sports fans can tailgate at a Black Bear football game or root for any of our 17 NCAA Division 1 teams.

Oh, and our hockey team is so good, we have our own riff on the Blue Man Group. We call them the Naked Five, and they can be seen, shirtless (they do keep their pants on, thank goodness), painted blue and white, running around Alfond Arena cheering. And it’s cold in there.

People say it snows all year in Maine. Not true! But even if it did, nobody in Orono ever let a little cold weather ruin the fun. In fact, UMaine has miles of groomed cross-country skiing trails. Maine Bound leads ice-climbing treks. And if you get a chill, you can always warm up in the hot tub or sauna at the Student Recreation and Fitness Center. It’s like we invented winter.
