Undergraduate Research

Right from the start, freshman get to work on building the skills they need after life at UMaine. Faculty members welcome students to work alongside them on research projects, helping students gain workplace experience through close mentor-mentee relationships. When you seek employment or further education after your undergraduate years at UMaine, here you will get the skills you need to succeed in today’s competitive marketplace.

Innovation

UMaine’s Foster Center for Student Innovation was launched in 2008 as a way to expose students to the real-life workplace dynamics they will encounter as UMaine graduates. At the center, students develop their innovative ideas into innovative business models, as well as develop the skills they need as entrepreneurs. Office space and meeting space are provided at the center as you work on your projects and business plans.

Location

The University of Maine prides itself for all it has to offer – and its location is second only to its academic programs. Located in the town of Orono, the campus itself features more than 15 miles of trails to walk, hike, bike or cross-country ski. Beyond Orono, you will find quick access to some of the country’s most spectacular natural destinations, including Acadia National Park, the Appalachian Trail and the White Mountains.

Student Success

UMaine students count their successes in many different ways. For some, student teaching internships as far north as rural Fort Kent or as south as urban Portland means gaining the experience they need to land the job they want and have the skills they desire – while staying right here in Maine. For others, it means traveling to Washington D.C. for an internship at the National Arboretum or visiting with financial professionals at the New York Stock Exchange. And for others it means competing at the highest level at NCAA Championship games. Perspectives on the UMaine experience are found in our student profiles.

Life After UMaine

As unique as your experience is at UMaine, there is one thing that cannot separate you from your future 100,000 alumni: Black Bear spirit. We all find ourselves beginning in the same place at UMaine – freshman housing – but our journey breaks into different paths before we all merge again at graduation. And even though we again go our different ways, we cannot forget where we gained our footing in life. Your fellow Black Bears are a network that actively helps UMaine students find that first job, provide mentorship along the way and relish UMaine memories together.
