TIME OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
What is there to
do at UMaine?
There are nearly 200
Student Organizations—there is something happening every night with
Campus Activities & Events—the Maine Center for the Arts brings in a
national show every week—Rec Sports is hugely popular—there's great
support for UMaine's Division I athletic teams—Maine Bound is our
outdoor recreation club—What do you like to do?
Campus Activities
& Events hosts five special weeks during the year—Maine
Mania—Welcome Back Week, First Year Family Day, Family & Friends
Weekend, Winter Carnival, and Spring Fling. CAB (Campus Activities
Board) operates the Maine Bus which takes students to various local
spots—like the movie theater or The Bangor Mall. CAB also organizes the
nightly activities in the Union—which are very well attended!
Monday: Games
Night—Tournaments for bingo, cribbage, Connect Four, etc. –with prizes!
Tuesday: Java
Jive—Acoustic music featuring campus & local talent. In spring 2004,
The Project was implemented to give away consultation time with Auburn
Moon Talent Agency and 100 free demo CD's for the winning band.
Wednesday: Kickin'
Flicks—sometimes first-run & pre-video store release movies.
Thursday: The
Frequency—local bands, talent shows, pool parties, speakers, dances
Friday: The Maine
Attraction—Comics, dances, and late nights in the Union.
Kickin' Flicks
(again)
Saturday:
Karaoke—very popular! Also, 2-3 bus trips to Boston are arranged each
semester.
Maine Center for
the Arts hosts national performances—be it theater, opera, concerts,
or comedians. Here are few we are looking forward to this year: Whoopi
Goldberg, Bo Diddley and Friends, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat" and "Man of LaMancha" – both performed by the Broadway
touring companies, "The Caine Mutiny" performed by the LA Theater Works,
Ian Anderson playing orchestral Jethro Tull, the Roy Haynes Quartet and
the Turtle Island Quartet.
School of
Performing Arts hosts student productions throughout the year—plays,
dance performances, and music concerts. Some recent productions have
been; Cabaret, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, A Funny Thing Happened on
the Way to the Forum, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, and
Chicago. Minsky Recital Hall, Hauck Auditorium, Cyrus Pavilion, and the
Maine Center for the Arts are used to house performances.
Student
Entertainment is a part of Student Government and provides
events for the student body through the guidance of the Student
Entertainment Committee. The goal is to provide low cost, but high
quality events. Some examples are major
concerts, Guest Lecture Series, and The Frequency (featuring local
bands). Past performers brought to UMaine by Student Entertainment
include Fuel, Maroon 5, Lifehouse and Bowling for Soup.
Maine Bound is
a rental source, home of the Outing Club and an indoor climbing wall. It
also offers courses for credit. You can get canoes, kayaks,
cross-country skis, snow shoes, climbing gear, tents, etc. The Outing
Club has organized trips such as kayaking coastal islands, or winter
backpacking. The Outing Club has a rustic chalet near Sugarloaf for
downhill skiers & snowboarders.

Student Recreation
and Fitness Center
A new $25 Million
facility will be completed by August, 2007. The plan for the new 87,000
sq. ft. facility, by
Cannon Design, was developed with significant student input to
create new facilities that will supply more fitness and recreation
opportunities to the campus, enhance the wellness and health of our
students, faculty, staff, and their families. To learn more, check out
the Campus Recreation website:

How good do you
have to be to play hockey?
With each sport at
UMaine, the level of recruitment, competition, and availability of
scholarship money varies. The best thing you can do is have your high
school coach get in touch with our coaches to determine the next step,
possibly sending a profile, tape or DVD. For individual sports, visit
our web-sites and see the times of our athletes or attend a game if you
can and watch your position. I can give the contact info for the
Coach's offices now.
