COST OF EDUCATION

What kind of Financial Aid is provided?

The University of Maine participates in all Federal Aid programs.  The only application form we require for financial aid is the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  The Priority Deadline is March 1—we encourage students to apply by February 15 to ensure that the form is received at the Federal Processing Center by March 1. The forms are available at your local high school guidance offices, however we encourage students and their families to submit the on-line application found at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Nearly every school in the nation requires the FAFSA to be eligible for federal and state financial aid.  It must be filled out every year the student is in school.  The information requested is taken from the parent and student tax documents from the previous year.  This info is plugged into a formula and is used to project what the family can contribute (Expected Family Contribution) to the Cost of Education.  This is done so the families with the greatest amount of need will receive the most aid.

This is a simple way to view the formula:  COE-EFC=Need

Cost of Education (COE) (Tuition & Fees,  Room & Board, Books & Supplies, Etc.)

-Expected Family Contribution(EFC)

=Financial Need

The window of opportunity for completing the FAFSA is January 1-February 15 (cannot be filed before January 1—February 15 is suggested to ensure that it is received at the Federal Processing Center by March 1).

Students completing the FAFSA and submitting it to the Federal Processing Center after UMaine's March 1 priority date and students who are accepted late in the admission process may be at a disadvantage for student aid.

Certain types of aid are contingent on the March 1 deadline—which means even if the student has the 'need' for more aid, they may not have the eligibility.

How much does it cost to go to UMaine?

It is approximately $14,500 for Tuition & Fees and Room & Board for an in-state student for the year.  It is approximately $25,500 per year for an out-of-state student.

Cost of Education 2006-2007
  In-State Out-of-State NEBHE/Canadian
Tuition & Fees $7,464 $18,414 $10,464
Room & Board $7,124 $7,124 $7,124
Subtotal $14,588 $25,538 $17,588

Indirect Costs
Books/Supplies $700 $700 $700
Travel/Misc. $1,850 $1,850 $1,850
Total $17,138 $28,088 $20,138

What is the NEBHE program?

NEBHE stands for New England Board of Higher Education.  There is an agreement among the Public Universities in New England in regards to available majors.  If the student's 'home' state public universities and colleges do not have a major that is offered at another New England public state university, the student may be able to attend that institution at a discounted tuition rate. At UMaine the NEBHE rate is 50% above the in-state tuition rate for specifically approved majors.  Refer to the Fact Sheet for a list of NEBHE majors at UMaine.
